Dr. Matt's cleanse combines clean eating with a super effective detox product. It got me back on track with my eating habits and I even lost a few pounds. And I didn't cheat...because I knew I'd have to report back to the group. Now THAT'S effective."
- SS, psychotherapist and holistic nutritionist

"I really appreciate how non-judgmental this detox approach was. In the past on diets or while detoxing I never felt normal for enjoying food- good or bad- it was more a sense that I had to endure good foods (even though I like them) and sacrifice every treat or as Matt put it- indulgence- for the good of my health. Any deviation from the ideal diet was condemnation and I would be forever cursed with body issues for lack of strict adherence to a rigid plan. While this plan is quite detailed it is also simple enough that I can easily incorporate the principles of it, remembering that a connection to food is fun! It made me all the more aware of the things I eat and the benefits that can be reaped from a wholesome diet, rather than fearing dire shameful consequences of occasionally treating myself to something enjoyable (however not strictly on the plan it might be). I"m so grateful for the chance to have participated! Thanks Dr. Matt!"
-HB

"I would recommend this Detox plan to anyone who wants to change their current health condition. I feel really good. I have lost weight (12lbs in 21 DAYS) not by dieting, but simply by eating more often, and choosing good, healthy, "unprocessed" foods. During the process I was sluggish...and was a little sad that I was not experiencing a greater lift of energy however, I now realize that between the diet and the cleansing product my body was working overtime getting rid of toxins (which was the whole point of the plan). Now that I'm off of the cleanse...and working on my maintenance regime, I have realized the energy that I was expecting during the process. I'm pleased with the results and have decided to do this 3 times a year. Thanks Dr. Matt."
-SB

"Working with Dr. Matt (Reddy) was a great experience. I learned a lot about what my body wants and needs and made some changes that work for me. The program impacted several different areas of my life, all in beneficial ways. Our meetings were always informative and fun. Matt allowed me to be focused and goal-oriented while giving me the space to be accepting and conscious about the myself and my choices."
-IJ

"My co-workers and family members are impressed that I went through this program and I continue to practice good eating habits. He felt the whole process was too labor intensive and boring. So when he designed and built his house, he created it with only a few walls that needed to be painted. The rest were exposed brick and the ever-popular wood paneling. (Now don't hold the wood paneling against him. It was the late 1960's and wood paneling was the craze). And it suited him perfectly.

Recently I was thinking about his dislike for painting walls. Underneath this odd quirk lies some wisdom. My grandfather knew that painting a room is not something to take lightly. It's work. And as I pondered this in the context of detox, I realized that properly detoxifying the body to restore health is very similar to painting a room. How long the new paint lasts and how it looks on the wall is a direct result of room preparation before painting begins. If the walls are not cleaned, old paint not scraped off, edges not taped, and walls not primed, the new paint will not last. It may look nice at first, but as time goes on the same old dreary look will return, paint will chip, and you will wonder if you even painted at all. Conversely, if the walls are cleaned, scraped, taped, and primed, the room will look magnificent for many years.

This analogy holds true with health as well. Treating only the symptoms is like painting over unprepared walls. It offers results for a brief time, but the results don’t last. Symptoms will keep returning and more and more “paint” (drugs/supplements) will have to be applied to deal with them. The more time spent preparing the body and cleaning out the cause of an illness, the more likely the results will last. Detoxifying the body this way will ensure that symptoms will disappear and not return.

All cells produce metabolic waste that must be eliminated from the body. In addition to cellular waste, we must deal with a world that is polluted and becoming more polluted everyday. Our world is so polluted it no longer is a question of if our bodies have toxins in them. The question now is how many toxins are present? These toxins are in food (pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, etc), in water (pesticides, herbicides, hormones, etc), and in the air (carbon monoxide, inhalants, solvents, etc). They all must be processed and eliminated. Fortunately, our bodies have amazing systems of detoxification designed to process these toxins and excrete them from the body.

The major way our body eliminates toxins is through the bile. It seems to be the foundation from which health can be restored. My patients know that we use four main supplements to enhance the production of bile: Taurine, Lecithin, Cod Liver Oil, and plant sterols, which are virtually impossible to obtain from our diets alone. For a more detailed look at these supplements click here. In our analogy of painting a room, enhancing bile flow is the prep work needed to ensure the painted wall lasts.

So what happens when we start preparing the walls for paint? Anyone who has ever done this knows that you often create quite a mess. The room is in disarray, plastic is everywhere, and dust and paint chips litter the floor. You've basically stirred things up and disrupted the status quo. If we quit as soon as we create this mess, the walls never get painted.

Like this disrupted room, our body's status quo is also shaken as we start to improve the bile flow and detox. Often uncomfortable symptoms like headaches, nausea, and diarrhea arise. We may think that something is wrong, that the supplements are making us sick, or that we want to quit. While these responses are understandable, it is vital to understand what is actually happening. Your body is waking up and you are in the process of creating lasting results.

Everyone reacts uniquely to the process of healing. As I've explained before, healing is not a quick or linear process. Just like painting a room, it requires work. However, by enhancing bile flow, we prepare the body for "paint." Our symptoms improve, the body heals, and the end result is a newly "painted room" that lasts.

Or you could just go with wood paneling.

Healing with Pulsating Electromagnetic Fields

In 2009, I began using Pulsating Electromagnetic Fields (PEMFs) with my patients. They also warn that the numbers will likely rise in the coming weeks. With this public health issue taking a prominent place in our media, I thought I would use the opportunity to explain that, while often very serious and sometimes deadly, bacteria, in fact, are often not the problem. Usually, we are.

That sounds strange, right? Let me explain. The more I study the physiology of the human body, the more amazed I am at its complexity. For example, your body is composed of between seventy to 100 trillion cells. That's a lot of cells, right? What you probably don't realize is this - there are more bacteria living in our body and on our body than cells of our body. That's right. You have more bacteria than your own cells.

Now take this information about bacteria and expand it out into the world. Can you even imagine how many bacteria are all around us? Think about the soil, the animals, the plants, all other humans, and the rest of our environment. Basically, bacteria are EVERYWHERE!
What's your reaction to this? Does it scare you? Is it upsetting? Are you reaching for your can of Lysol as we speak? I'm not trying to scare or upset you - I simply want you to realize that we are not going to escape bacteria. We never have and we never will. This is because life as we know it requires bacteria.

That's right. Life requires bacteria. As humans, we are a part of a very complex and beautiful interaction taking place between an infinite number of life forms. We need to live in balance with all the forms of life around us. This includes bacteria.

Of course, things can be out of balance. Soil can be infected with certain bacterial forms and lead to food contamination, as with the cantaloupes. We can become horribly sick and even die from bacteria. But are bacteria the problem - or is it the imbalance?

From a Naturopathic medical perspective, bacterial infections are a sign of imbalance. If we were to simply kill off the bacteria, we'd only be addressing a symptom, rather than the root cause. Naturopathic doctors work with the body to restore balance. This involves supporting the cells of the immune system in recognizing the imbalance, clearing the infection, and restoring balance. Remember that the body is amazing and is constantly doing this to some degree. Sometimes it just needs a bit more help.

Of course we should avoid exposure to excessive amounts of bacteria if possible, including heeding all public health warnings, but we also need to work to keep ourselves as healthy and strong as possible. This includes using supplements, herbs, diet, etc. to ensure that the digestive system, the liver, and the hormones are working optimally. If we have a strong body, any imbalance will be corrected easily and smoothly.

If you don't believe me, perhaps you'll believe a more famous practitioner - Dr. Louis Pasteur. Remember him? He created the process of heating milk - “pasteurization” - in order to kill off potentially contaminating bacteria. Apparently, on his death bed, Louis Pasteur realized that his focus on killing bacteria was in fact not the best way to solve the problem. “It's not the bacteria; it's the terrain,” were his words, indicating that an individual's overall health determined whether or not bacteria would overrun the system.

Learn to live with nature and not fight against it.

Maybe you’re a woman who has been told “Don’t try; only men can do that.” Whatever they may be, these messages are not at all helpful. They weigh us down and keep us from all that we can be.

We can be anybody we desire and we can do anything we set our mind to. I truly believe that. All that stands in our way is our own limiting beliefs. Do you want to be healthy and strong? Do you want to achieve an optimal weight? Do you want to sing in a bluegrass band? Do you want to travel and see the world? Ask yourself if you believe you can. What comes up for you when you ask yourself this question? Is it fear? Maybe doubt in your abilities? Whatever it may be, these beliefs about yourself are powerful indicators of areas in your life where you haven’t yet realized your true potential. The good news is that these beliefs can change.

A belief is nothing more than a thought that you have held for long time. If you change your thoughts, soon your belief will change too. For example, if you desire to lose 50 pounds and have the thought that “I can never lose weight” or “I guess my metabolism is just slowing down as I get older,” you will find it very difficult to lose the weight. On the other hand if your thoughts are “I can make healthy eating decisions,” and “My body is a perfect creation that can and will find the correct weight for me,” then you will effortlessly and easily lose the weight. In the first way of thinking you believe that you cannot lose weight and in the second you believe you can. By simply changing the way you look at things, the things around you will change.

Removal of those limiting beliefs however, is not often easy. It takes more than just "positive thinking." These beliefs are deeply rooted and it takes work to replace them. In looking to support my patients achieve their health goals and overcome their limiting beliefs, I have come across some wonderful tools. Two tools I have used quite successfully are Homeopathy and Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. Homeopathy is an energetic form of medicine using specific remedies, and EFT is a process designed to eliminate limiting beliefs. If you are interested in learning more about either technique, please let me know. I would be happy to teach you and help you explore how they could support you.

What I desire for myself and for all of you is that we never lose the dreams that we have inside. Remember the kid in the Superman cape that could leap tall buildings and fly faster than a speeding bullet. That kid is in each one of us. Somewhere, buried under years of conditioning and useless beliefs, lies an amazing, creative, and powerful genius that absolutely cannot fail. I encourage you to find that kid today and see the mystery and excitement in everything around you. Don’t settle for someone else telling you what you are capable of doing. Dream big and never stop seeking. Your dreams, whatever they may be, are an indispensable part of your journey and they are uniquely yours. They are a part of what makes you, you. And you can accomplish anything. Imagine the possibilities.

Knowing Your Blood Type Is Vital To Your Health.

In our modern world of cell phones, IPads, and Starbucks, it is hard to imagine that we have within us a direct link to our past. As we get into our cars and drive to the grocery store, the idea that we once had to hunt for our food and gather what we could find is so far from our consciousness that it seems like the plot of a Hollywood movie. And yet, as hard as it is to believe, every single one of your 75 trillion cells contains this link. But what you may not realize is that this link to your past has profound implications on your health today.

This link to your past is your genetics, or more specifically, your DNA. Each cell of your body, about 75 trillion of them, contains the complete genetic blueprint (DNA) that creates you. And it is this DNA that carries the genetic information from generation to generation.

Genetics is a VERY complicated science and we are only now beginning to scratch the surface of its true importance in health and wellbeing. Fortunately we have a wonderful marker in our genes that can help us understand our genetics a little more easily. This marker is your blood type. Think of it as a signpost on the road to understanding your specific genes. Picture a road that branches into four different and distinct roads. When you get to the crossroads, you see four signs. Type O blood? Please go down this genetic road. Type A? We'll need you over here. Type B? Your genetic road starts here. Type AB? See that rarely used road? That's you. And down your particular road you go.

So what lies down these genetic roads? What differences do we see between blood types? It turns out that there are many differences along the respective genetic roads. So many, in fact, that there are numerous books and studies with this information. What follows are summaries of four specific areas where we see major differences.

Immune system
Blood type influences how well you make immune proteins and how easily you recognize pathogens and cancerous cells.
Type O – very aggressive immune response leads to hypersensitivity and inflammation
Type A – low levels of immunoglobulins IgA and IgE; weaker Natural Killer response to foreign anitgens
Type B – slow to clear bacterial infections and susceptible to viruses
Type AB – Very similar to Type A

Stress response
How you deal with stress and make stress hormones is influenced by your blood type.
Type O – Make more epinephrine (quick-acting stress hormone) but make less cortisol (chronic stress hormone)
Type A – Make more cortisol, less epinephrine
Type B – Similar to Type A
Type AB – More similar to Type O

Metabolism
Metabolism can show up differently in the blood types. This means more than just weight loss: impaired metabolism can lead to things like insulin resistance and heart disease.
Type O -very efficient metabolism but gains weight on high carbohydrate diets.
Type A and AB– Make more cholesterol and lipoproteins
Type B – Like type O, very sensitive to high carbohydrate diets. Also makes less Nitric oxide so may have high blood pressure.

Digestion
Blood type influences how well you digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Type A – less stomach acid, therefore has more difficulty digesting animal proteins. Easier time with carbohydrates.
Type O – Makes plenty of stomach acid and alkaline phosphtase. Animal proteins a must. Does poorly with wheat, corn, etc
Type B – Most balanced digestively. Does well with a good combination and variety of foods.
Type AB – Usually very similar to Type A.

Likely we would all agree that simply lumping all humans into four categories is a little too reductive. The interaction between genes, the expression and regulation of genes, and the role of nutrition, emotions, and thoughts on our genes, are all areas that are only beginning to be researched. Without a doubt, we are very complex creations. But by knowing your blood type, you have a great place to start in understanding your particular physiology. You know what foods are more easily digestible. You know what to do to enhance a weak area. You find ways to exercise and move your body that support you. All of this is very empowering. It allows you to take steps to prevent disease and enhance your overall health. And it links you to your ancestors. All from just one gene marker. Pretty amazing.

The # 1 Most Effective Way To Detox: And Why It's Crucial To Your Health

My grandfather hated to paint walls.

How the Body Heals

I recently dealt with a bout of bronchitis. I had all the usual symptoms: cough, congestion, hoarseness, and fever. I slept poorly, was exhausted, and didn't leave my house or my couch. In short I was pretty miserable for a couple of days and as my girlfriend will attest, I was a horrible patient. But while I was irritable, tired, and often frustrated, this illness gave me a chance to really look at how the body heals and it really is nothing short of amazing.

As a Naturopathic physician, my view of illness and healing is different than that of my conventionally trained colleagues. Illness, as seen from a Naturopathic viewpoint, is a message from the body that something is out of balance. The symptoms that we exhibit are how the body expresses this message. Rather than simply stop the symptoms, Naturopathic doctors seek to understand what the symptoms are telling us. For example, diarrhea is a symptom created by the body to flush out something that is causing digestive imbalance. This could be due to poorly digested food, bacterial imbalance, or even too much Vitamin C. We may not know exactly what is causing the symptom, but we need to look and not just suppress the symptom with a medication or even an herb. By understanding what the symptom means and what is creating it, we can support the body to truly heal.

What makes being a Naturopathic physician difficult at times is that most people expect their doctor to give them something to make their symptoms go away quickly. When they don't see immediate symptom resolution or when I tell them that it may take a while to truly resolve their health issue, they get discouraged and may never come back. While I understand the desire to be rid of symptoms, true healing often doesn't occur unless the body can create symptoms, be supported through them, and come out the other side. I have no desire to suppress symptoms. What I am interested in is supporting the body's innate and powerful ability to heal itself.

What we need then is an understanding of how the body heals. A physician named Constantine Hering, who lived from 1800 - 1880, observed three patterns of healing. These observations are called "Hering's Laws of Cure." Dr. Hering observed that (1) Healing progresses from the deepest levels, like vital organs and emotions, to the superficial levels, like the skin. He observed (2) that as healing progresses, symptoms appear and resolve in reverse chronological order to their appearance. In other words, the most recent symptom of a disease picture will resolve first and then earlier symptoms may reappear and resolve until all symptoms are gone. Finally (3) he observed that healing progresses from the upper parts of the body to the lower parts. So for example, joint pain in the neck may resolve, but may move down to the fingers. Knee joint pain may show up next as the finger pain resolves, and so on.

These brilliant observations show us that there is a pattern to the appearance and resolution of symptoms as the body heals. It is predictable and if we pay attention we can see progress, no matter how slight. Has the lung problem you've had for many years resolved, but now you have a skin problem? That's how the body heals. Has your anxiety and fear gotten better, but now you are experiencing digestive upset? Things are moving from deeper to more superficial. It's all part of the healing process. These symptoms really are telling us something. However, if we simply suppress these messages, nothing is ever resolved. We may feel somewhat better in the short term, but since healing has not occurred, the message will show up again as some other symptom, perhaps more serious than before.

Restoring health is like peeling an onion. There are many layers to get through until we reach the core. It takes patience, perseverance, and a real commitment to see it through to the end. The good news is that our body's are really incredible. They can and do heal all the time. Often they need some help and some encouragement, but in the end they know what to do to heal. The question is then are we helping it or hindering it?

My commitment as a Naturopathic physician is to help the body heal by supporting it to do what it already knows how to do. It may not be an easy or quick process, but it will be a process that will create lasting results. Learn to see symptoms as your body speaking to you. What is your body trying to tell you? Do you need more sleep? More water? Less sugar? Your body will always give you the direction you need to go. It is always speaking. Are you listening?

Your Access to Supplements and Vitamins Could Soon Change.

I believe my role as a physician is to heal and educate. Rarely do I feel the need to use my position to discuss politics. There are some political issues though that I feel need to be brought to the attention of my friends and patients. What follows below is a letter written by Dr. Al Sears, a medical doctor in Florida. He does a great job summarizing a proposed piece of legislation that could severely limit your access to supplements and vitamins. Please take a moment to read his letter and after you read it, if you feel so inclined, please send a quick email to your senator via the link provided. Thank you for your support for natural medicine.

Al Sears, MD
11903 Southern Blvd., Ste. 208
Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411

February 23, 2010

Dear Matt,

Your right to make choices about your own body is being challenged.

I seldom, if ever, discuss politics with you. Europeans already live under such a law. It’s so restrictive; most people in Europe buy their vitamins here in the U.S.

Part of the problem is the way the bill is written. The language is open-ended and subject to broad interpretation.

Even if a vitamin company makes a mistake with their paperwork, or the FDA claims they made a mistake with their paperwork, they can take that product off the market forever. Even if that product has a clean track record.

Also at risk is the dose of a vitamin or nutrient. That means the FDA could say, for example, “Vitamin C is only safe at a dose of 10mg.”

But here’s the deal: If your vitamin C only has 10mg per tablet, you’d have to take an entire bottle to get a one-day supply. That’s another strategy the FDA could use to kill off a vitamin or nutrient.

This bill is dangerous: Both to your health and to your rights as an individual.

I urge you to click HERE and send a message to your Senator.

The Alliance for Natural Health has prepared the letter for you. I don't believe there is any one supplement out there that will cure all of your ailments. And I surely don't believe that health can be found solely by taking a supplement. But I have found something that seems to come very close. I'm referring to Vitamin D and let me tell you, the research is exciting and extremely promising.

Vitamin D plays a major role in regulating the genes in your body. Of our 30,000 genes, Vitamin D has been shown to influence somewhere around 2000 of them. These are genes that play a role in everything from cancer to heart disease. In fact many health experts believe that the use of Vitamin D to prevent cancer and heart disease will save us billions of dollars annually on health care costs. Vitamin D also enhances and supports the immune system cells. Low levels of Vitamin D are linked to an inability of the immune system to rid the body of viral and bacterial diseases. So instead of costly vaccine development each year for the flu virus (which may or may not be helpful), maybe we need to make sure we all have enough Vitamin D to make it through the winter. Just a thought.

Vitamin D is vital to healthy bones. It supports the proper use of calcium by making sure the calcium ends up on the bones, in nerves, and in muscle cells where it belongs. It prevents calcium build up in our arteries and tissues. Anyone with concern about bone health should first consider Vitamin D, then worry about calcium.

Our body creates Vitamin D. It does this through exposure to the sun. Its estimated that we make somewhere around 20,000 IU of Vitamin D from 20 minutes or so of unblocked, unfiltered sun exposure. So why are we all likely low in Vitamin D? The answer here involves a few factors. First it is pretty obvious that we don't spend as much time outdoors as we should. Most of us work indoors, workout in gyms, and ride around in cars. During the colder months this is even more pronounced. Even in the summer we have a hard time though since we slather sunscreen on ourselves before we go into the sun. This may be helpful to prevent sunburns, but also blocks the beneficial rays of the sun that make Vitamin D. A bit of balance is needed here. Another reason we don't make enough Vitamin D is simply because of where we live on the planet. During the months of November through April, the sun isn't high enough in the sky to generate the correct wavelengths of light for us to make Vitamin D. This is seen above and below the tropics. Around the equator this isn't an issue, but here in Colorado and the US, it is.

So what can you do to make sure you have enough Vitamin D? The easiest way is to go outside without sunscreen during the warmer months. Obviously don't stay out too long and get a sunburn, but be out long enough to allow yourself to make enough Vitamin D. 15 to 20 minutes daily should do it. From a supplement stand point, I first recommend taking Cod Liver Oil everyday. This will make sure that you have at least a small amount daily. For many people however, Cod Liver Oil doesn't seem to be enough and they need additional Vitamin D. The correct form of Vitamin D to take is Vitamin D3, also called "cholecalciferol." This form is much better and more utilizable than Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Dosage of Vitamin D supplementation depends of age. Here are some general suggestions. They are only suggestions. Remember the only way to know "for sure" is to have blood tests done to measure Vitamin D levels.

Children up to 5: 35 IU daily

5 - 10 years old: 2500 IU daily

10 - 18: 3000 IU daily

18-30: 5000 IU daily

30 and up 5000 IU daily

I really think that many of our chronic diseases are connected to low levels of Vitamin D. The research is clear and points to this conclusion. From bone health and heart disease, to the immune system and cancer our genes need Vitamin D. What is great about this is that we can do something about it very easily. Enjoy the sunshine and during the fall and winter make sure to take a Vitamin D supplement. It really is that simple. A miracle supplement? Not likely, but is sure is important. So there you have it. Doctor's orders...Go outside and play!

The Ultimate Detox 2010

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; These questions typically boil down to "Should I be taking an Omega 3 supplement?" and "Which is better, Flax oil or Fish oil?" For answers to these questions lets a take a closer look at these important nutrients.

First of all it is important to understand what is meant by the term "essential fatty acid." Any nutrient given the name "essential" means that that nutrient must be part of the diet. It means that the only way our body receives it is by ingesting it in some form. This is distinct from "non-essential nutrients" which are nutrients that our body can create from other nutrient forms. For example, if the body need more of the amino acid tyrosine, it can make more by converting the amino acid phenylalanine into tyrosine. Therefore tyrosine is a "non-essential" amino acid. The same can be said of fats. Our body can create certain fats, but can't create others. The Omega 3 fatty acids are essential. Our body has no way of making them so we must get them from our diet.

Let me say a quick word about fatty acids. We use the term EFA or Omega 3 fatty acid all the time but what exactly are fatty acids? Simply put, fatty acids are building blocks of fats and oils. The types of fatty acids found in oils depends on the source of the oil (olives, fish, sunflower seeds, flax seeds etc). All oils are made up of many types of fatty acids, but some fatty acids are more prevalent than others in the oil. High levels of the Omega 3 type of fatty acids are found in fish oil and flax oil and are therefore, the best sources of these essential nutrients.

So because we have to get the Omega 3 fatty acids from our diet, what is the best form? To answer this question, let's look briefly at what the Omega 3 fatty acids do in our body.

Omega 3 fatty acids are used by the body primarily to reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and promote healing. They do this because they are converted into compounds called Prostaglandins. The type of prostaglandins formed from the Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and extremely beneficial to healing the body. However, not all Omega 3 fatty acids are created equal. The type of Omega 3 from Flax oil, called Alpha Linoleic Acid, is not converted easily into the beneficial prostaglandins, but the types of Omega 3's found in fish oils are. Therefore the body uses the fish oils much better than it does the flax oils when it comes to creating beneficial prostaglandins.

Fish oil supplements vary in their source. Most fish oils come from the bodies of sardines, mackerel, salmon, cod, and tuna. There is also oil that comes from the liver of cod. Cod liver oil is unique in that it contains plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids along with high levels of vitamin A. Vitamin A is very difficult to get in our diet so to make sure my patients are receiving adequate amounts of vitamin A, I recommend they take a daily dose of cod liver oil. In doing so I know they are getting both the Omega 3s and enough vitamin A.

Omega 3 fatty acids come in many shapes and sizes. In practice I have seen their importance in healing the body, but only if they come from sources that we can use easily. With so many choices on the market, I want my patients to be taking the best and most easily used forms of these important nutrients. Since the Omega 3's found in fish oils are more utilizable, in my opinion they are the best source and should be used over flax oil to promote health.

Naturopathic Approches to Flu Prevention

The Influenza virus, or the flu, rears its ugly head each fall and winter causing distress in the form of work loss, missed school days, and many symptoms throughout the whole body. While we are all familiar with the common symptoms of the illness, (fever, extreme fatigue, body aches, headache, cough, etc.), what exactly happens with the flu?

We get sick and exhibit symptoms from viruses like the flu because our immune system is mobilized to destroy the infected cells. Signals from infected cells will trigger our immune response and the result is fever, inflammation, and an increase in the amount of white blood cells. At the site of infection the white blood cells mark the infected cells for destruction or can ingest the offending cell. Some white blood cells create antibodies to bind to cells infected with the virus and destroy it. Antibodies are very specific and will recognize only certain viruses. In short, all symptoms we experience from the flu are the body’s immune system responding to the virus.

So what can we do to prevent infection or at least shorten the symptoms from a flu infection? Here are 6 easy ways to prevent the flu.

Wash your hands regularly - Viruses enter the body typically from oral and nasal secretions so coughs and sneezes can easily transmit them. Take all the precautions that mom taught you Wash your hands regularly, don’t cough or sneeze on someone, and be aware of those around you who are sick. Since we can’t always follow those guidelines and are not always able to avoid being exposed to viruses, we must have cells that are strong enough to resist infection.

Stress management – Our body can only handle so much stress before it becomes weaker and more susceptible to illnesses and infection. It is imperative to find a way to manage our stress if we are to remain healthy. Yoga, meditation, prayer, biofeedback, exercise, etc are all some effective methods. Make sure to find one that works for you.

Eat high quality foods - Food provides our cells with the necessary information to function optimally. Whatever foods you choose to eat try to eat the highest quality food possible. Organic produce, free-range meat, whole grains, and healthy fats all provide the body what it needs to be healthy. Schedule an appointment with Stephanie to find the foods that work for you.

Support your liver in making healthy bile – Use the supplements Taurine, Cod Liver Oil, Lecithin, and Plant Sterols to ensure healthy fat absorption and the creation of healthy cell membranes. Cells that are strong can resist viral infections. (see the post below for more details on these important supplements).

Avoid Sugar – Processed white sugar and other processed foods containing sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or sugar substitutes like Splenda are all damaging to the immune system. Numerous studies have shown the negative effect of sugar on the white blood cells and other immune cells.

Take extra Vitamin D – Vitamin D levels are lower during the fall and winter. This decline contributes to many people being susceptible to the flu. Take 2000 units of Vitamin D3 during the colder months to give your immune system a boost.

Now obviously we cannot always prevent viral illnesses like the flu. Even though we do all the “right things” we may get sick. This is not the end of the world. Remember that our immune system is amazing and will help us get well again. Here are 6 suggestions to assist the body in its healing efforts.

Decrease the food you consume. Digestion is a lot of work for the body and a body that is sick needs all the help it can get. Eat only light and easy to digest foods like broths, steamed vegetables, and steamed rice. Your grandmother’s suggestion of chicken soup is another great idea.

Stay hydrated – It is extremely important to keep your fluids up. Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks like coffee, soda and sports drinks as they can depress the immune system. Stick to fresh water and herbal teas.

Do not suppress a fever – Although it is an uncomfortable symptom of the flu, a fever is the body raising its temperature to heal itself. A fever in the range 99.5-104.5°F is a normal response. Watch the fever carefully, keep well hydrated, and do not give food. A tepid bath or cold washcloth can be used to lower the fever slightly if you are worried.

Homeopathic Remedies – Homeopathic treatment for the flu was very effective during the flu pandemic in 1918. The most popular remedy is Occillococcinum. Take 3 pellets at the first hint of flu and 3 pellets every 3 hours after until you feel better. There are many other effective remedies so don’t hesitate to request help finding an effective one.

Elderberry – Elderberry is very well known for its anti-viral properties. It is extremely effective at slowing viral replication and decreasing symptoms of the flu.

Warming Socks – This is a great Naturopathic hydrotherapy treatment to enhance the immune system. To do this wonderful treatment find a pair of old cotton socks and get them wet. Ring them out thoroughly and put them on your feet. Cover them with wool socks and go to bed. In the morning you will find them dry and hopefully you will feel better. Do this as many nights as necessary.

Our immune systems are truly incredible and can handle most common viral infections fairly easily. The bottom line is to be proactive about your health and wellness. By taking the steps above you will minimize the symptoms of the flu and move through the winter months with ease.

Nutrients to Support Cellular Health

You really are what you eat. There is nothing else, besides food, which can be used to make you. Every one of the trillions of cells making up your body requires certain building blocks like fats, proteins and carbohydrates. These nutrients build cell membranes, make enzymes, make hormones, and do many other complex things. Said another way, your overall health is a direct result of how healthy your cells are and the availability of nutrients to build your cells. Unfortunately we can no longer acquire all of these important nutrients from diet alone. As humanity has grown and spread across the earth, we have significantly changed the food supply and the nutrients available from our food. Practices like cooking food, pesticide use, and canning or otherwise packaging our food has led to significant voids in our nutrition. Because supporting health requires proper nutrition, there are a few supplements that must be used to replace what is missing. Strongly consider adding the following supplements to your diet and consider them food. Your body will thank you!

Taurine - Taurine is an extremely important amino acid that is a key ingredient in the formation of bile. It is found in high amounts in raw eggs, raw milk, and raw meat. We don't eat these foods raw typically, so we have a hard time making quality bile. The liver binds taurine to cholesterol to keep the cholesterol, which is a fat, dissolved in the bile. Without enough taurine, cholesterol will form stones which block bile flow and impede proper digestion and elimination. Taurine also is a soothing inhibitory neurotransmitter and plays a major role in stabilizing the heart beat and electrical activity of nerves.

Triple Strength Lecithin - Lecithin is a major source of phospholipids, specifically Phosphatidyl choline. Our body needs these essential phospholipids for building cell membranes (remember you have around 100 trillion cells!), and supporting brain function and the tissue of the nervous system. Phosphatidyl choline is also a key component of the bile.

Cod Liver Oil - It is widely accepted that we need the essential omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. While there are many sources of these important fats, cod liver oil provides something that other fish oils do not. It provides Vitamin A and Vitamin D. These are two very important vitamins that are not easy to get in the diet. Roles these vitamins play are extensive and include mucus membrane health, skin health, immune system support, and reduction of inflammation. Kids especially need Vitamin A, so start them early.

Plant sterols - Sterols are types of lipids (fats) that are used to make healthy cell membranes. One type of sterol that we are all familiar with is cholesterol. Cholesterol is made by the liver and is the starting building block for many of our hormones like cortisol, estrogen and testosterone. All grains produce sterols as well. In our processing of grains, however, we remove these vital lipids. The removal prevents products we make from the grains from going rancid, but leaves a significant hole in our nutrition. Fortunately we can rectify this problem with supplementation, although there are not a lot of products on the market. The product I have found and that I recommend is called Tre En En, made by GNLD. By supplementing these missing pieces we ensure that the body has what it needs to make healthy cells. It is with these healthy cells that we can restore balance to our physiology and ultimately heal.

Preventive Wellness with Pulsating Magnetic Fields

Please join us for a wonderful evening about Pulsating Electromagnetic Fields and Magnetic Resonance Stimulation!

Learn and experience the most advanced, reliable European technology with over 6,500 studies and is currently being used by over 4,000 athletes and over 400,000 satisfied home users in Europe.

Based on thousands of cases and extensive studies MRS 2000+ designo is being used successfully as a supportive and meaningful medium for the following indications:

Allergies

Heart Conditions

Sleep Disorders

Osteoporosis

Pain

Depression

Bowel Disorders

Fibromyalgia ...just to name a few!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009 at the Boulder Outlook Hotel, 800 28th St. Boulder, CO

Presented by: Joel P. This is an understandable question since most of medicine today is divided into specialties. We have specialists in the heart and cardiovascular system, specialists for the skin, specialists for eye, the liver, the kidney, etc. But what if an illness crosses over into more than one system of the body? What if, in the case of diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes Mellitus, all systems of the body are affected? Who do we turn to then?

It appears from the outside that our bodies are solid, formed, and distinct. In this form we can identify organs, vessels, liquids, gases, etc. We even know the function of these distinct parts that make up our physical body. What is not readily apparent is the inherent interaction within every aspect of our body. Every thought, every idea, every experience plays a vital role in making up who we are. Not only does each cell communicate with each other, but each cell communicates with the outside world. From the air we breathe and the food we eat, to the things we see and emotions that wash over us, we are constantly interacting with all that is around us. There is no separation. I’ll repeat that: there is NO separation. Who you are is a direct result of a beautiful, web-like process of all systems of your body and all interactions with your environment.

Consider the complexity of the hormone insulin. Insulin is widely known for its role in blood sugar balance. It binds to cells and “unlocks” them to allow glucose inside. In other words, high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood cause insulin levels to rise so the glucose can enter the cells. When the cells are “full,” insulin levels decline and excess glucose is stored. Problems arise when the cells do not respond to insulin. Cells lose their sensitivity to insulin when they are constantly exposed to it. Take for example what happens when you walk into a smelly room. Right away you can smell whatever it is that stinks, but over time you don’t. You “get used to it” because your body has down-regulated receptors for the smell. The same thing occurs with insulin and leads to glucose in the blood that cannot get into the cells. The cells think that there is problem with not enough insulin so they stimulate the production of more insulin from the pancreas leading to a state called hyperinsulinemia. Hyperinsulinemia for a long period of time is a risk factor for many chronic conditions that we see today including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Cardiovascular disease, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and Hypertension (high blood pressure).

So how does this relate to the web-like interactions mentioned above? Elevated glucose in the blood and the resulting hyperinsulinemia are not caused by one thing. That is to say, there is no one root cause. They are caused by a variety of different mechanisms all interacting together. For example, a diet of highly processed foods and sugar leads to quick rises in blood glucose. A sedentary lifestyle prevents the muscles, which are huge consumers of glucose, from utilizing glucose efficiently. Stress upregulates the body’s use of glucose stores. And toxicity causes inflammation and impairs cellular function. It is a complex web with many components and interactions. If we only focus on one system that is dysregulated, we miss many other factors.

Health and wellness cannot be limited only to single systems. Now more than ever, medicine must move from a focus on single systems and adopt a more holistic and functional view. This is why I am so excited to be a Naturopathic physician. Inherent in the philosophy of Naturopathic medicine is this focus on the whole person. By treating the whole we honor the amazing web that makes us who we are; perfect and amazing beings destined for great things and open to endless possibilities. Be well.

Remembering the Connection

(This was written about a year and a half ago. A lot has changed in my life since then, but when I read it again recently, I really wanted to share it. On this day where we set aside time to give thanks, there is nothing more important than the Oneness that we all share. Thank you all for being in my life.)

You are all amazing. As I ponder the sheer elegance of life, I want to extend my Gratitude to each and every one of you for the remarkable beings that you are. You see I’ve lost my Connection with many of you. We really aren’t disconnected, but my perception is that I am separate from you all; a being alone in this world trying to learn through my struggles. What I fail to remember is that we are all Connected. Recently though I am starting to remember.
It is easy to miss the Connection as we all hustle unconsciously through our days. We rush to work, put in our time, collect our pay, and rush home. We neglect the food that nourishes us, fail to exercise, forget our families and friends, and then wonder why we feel so tired, sick, and depressed. Maybe we’ve hurt those we care about or felt hurt by others. We feel alone, scared, and wonder how we could be this way. Fortunately this can be remedied. The remedy is to remember our Connection.

So what Connects us all? We are all Connected to Source. You are from Source and therefore you are Source. Each of us is from the same Source. There are many words we use to describe this Connection. Some use God, Source, Universe, Allah, etc. I’m not here to talk about religion though. This is much more than religion. It is more than a building, more than centuries of dogma, and more than any book can teach. This is about a consciousness and peace that goes beyond understanding. This is about Faith in what you cannot see and about Belief in the perfection of each of us.

I have learned a lot recently from Dr. Wayne Dyer. Many of you may have seen him on PBS and if you do, I strongly encourage you to stop flipping channels and listen to what he has to say. He is a powerful speaker and storyteller. Here is one story that I’d like to pass along to you as an illustration of our connection to something greater than us. Our Source if you will.

Visualize a large field in the country. It’s maybe 2 acres and is bordered by cottonwood trees on one edge and a stream on the other. It is a Beautiful and Tranquil place. Now visualize the field covered in all sorts of junk. In this field lie pieces of metal, hunks of rubber, and pieces of broken glass. Now imagine a huge wind comes up and picks up this junk. It spins and twists the pieces of glass, rubber, metal, etc higher and higher until suddenly it stops and all the pieces fall toward the earth. But instead of landing in random fashion all over the field, the pieces fall perfectly into the form of a Boeing 747 airplane. Each piece landing exactly in the correct spot, forming this marvelous machine. What are the odds of this happening? Would anyone take the bet that this could happen randomly?

Now consider the human heart. Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times. Each beat is a complex event of electrical current flow, movement of Potassium and Sodium ions, muscle fibers contracting and relaxing, etc. And it beats without you thinking about it. So what are the odds that your amazing heart happened by some random event or accident? Better or worse than the 747 odds? What about your eyes? Or your brain? Or each cell of each organ of your body? These are all a million times more complex than a 747. And you are here. Your heart is beating and you are reading this story. Amazing!

An important word here is Gratitude. I know that when we are Grateful, we are connected to our Source, to God, to Universe. So start to be aware of your state of Gratefulness. It is a great barometer for how connected to God you are at that moment. Be Grateful for the sunshine. Be Grateful for the money that flows into your life, no matter how little or how much. Be Grateful for the heart that beats in your chest, that never tires and never complains. Be Grateful for those close to you. Being Grateful is a vibration that will attract what you desire into your life and you will be amazed at how your life will flow

The same can be said about achieving health and wellness. The order of the Universe is wellness. While it may be hard to feel Connected and to be Grateful when we are ill and suffering, just reaching for a better feeling thought will slowly improve our health. In the place of illness the desire to be well is very strong. This powerful desire will manifest as we turn our focus from a “why is this happening to me” mentality, to a realization that we are powerful creators, Grateful for the each opportunity in our lives. It doesn’t happen instantly, but by enjoying the journey and making peace with where we are, we will eventually get where we want to go.
So thank you all. Thank you for your support. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your friendship. On a personal note I’d like to add some personal statements of Gratitude

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in; Would you write a book? Climb Mount Everest? Play drums in a rock band? Or maybe you would take an art class, or start a new business, or call that special person you’ve had your eye on. Remember, failure is not possible so let your mind go. Dream big and take chances. Now breathe. Can you feel it? Can you feel excitement deep inside as you ponder making your dream a reality? Now imagine having that excitement everyday. Imagine the awe and the gratefulness that will pour from you as everything falls into place. Imagine the possibilities.

When was the last time you let yourself dream? I remember as a kid I would be Luke Skywalker, a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, and a master carpenter building a mansion, all in one day. When I wore my Underroos (remember Underroos?) and my cape I was Superman. When I put on my engineer cap I drove the train. It never entered my mind that I wasn’t Luke Skywalker, a football player, a carpenter, a train engineer, or Superman. I dreamed it and imagined it and it was. I was free to be whoever I wanted and whatever I wanted. And it was fun. So what happened to us?

We seem to lose the ability to dream as we get older. We are inundated with messages that say “That’s impossible,” or “How impractical,” or “Grow up.” We hear messages like, “You didn’t go to college and only college graduates can have that job” or “You’re too small to be a professional athlete”.

High Cholesterol: Facts and Fiction

Not a day goes by when we don’t hear something about high cholesterol. Advertising for cholesterol lowering medications dominates TV, magazines, and radio. We are all encouraged to “ask our doctor if (insert drug name here) is right for you.” These slick ads have made these medications household names, leading us to believe that we can’t live without them. But what exactly is the truth about high cholesterol?

When you get your cholesterol measured, three parameters are checked; Total Cholesterol (TC), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). Lipoproteins are molecules that carry cholesterol in the blood. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver and intestine to the rest of the body. HDL carries cholesterol back to the liver. Because high levels of LDL are linked to more atherosclerosis or fat deposition in the arteries, it has become known as “bad” cholesterol. HDL is considered “good” because it picks up excess cholesterol and takes it to the liver for processing.

Cholesterol comes from a variety of sources. A small amount is taken in by what we eat, especially if we eat a lot of animal products. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have little if any cholesterol. The rest of cholesterol is made mostly by the liver and small intestine. It is synthesized from glucose and triglycerides and is used to make cell membranes, hormones, and bile. Without cholesterol we could not make estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. It is an extremely important compound.

There is little doubt that high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. It is not the only culprit however. A comprehensive cardiac panel must be run to look at every possible contributor. Make sure to ask about your homocysteine level, your CRP level, and your fasting blood glucose level, as all these contribute equally if not more to cardiovascular disease.

Contrary to what it may seem like by all the advertisements, there are many ways to treat high cholesterol. Don’t settle for the party line. Instead, seek out what will work for you. Seek the help of a qualified Naturopathic physician for many scientifically proven alternatives like nutritional supplements and Therapeutic lifestyle programs. These programs are very beneficial and are designed to reduce the risks for cardiovascular disease by stabilizing blood sugars, reducing cholesterol intake, and enhancing cholesterol clearance and utilization. Included in these programs are many very helpful supplements to address high cholesterol levels. So take control of your health and high cholesterol levels today!

Natural Approaches for a Child with a Fever

Nothing is more distressing for a parent than a child with a fever. Keep in mind however that a fever is a normal, natural process used to enhance the bodies healing capabilities. While distressing to observe and to experience, fever is actually a sign that the immune system is working at its best. Common triggers of fever in a child include infection (most common), medication reactions, dehydration, and sometimes teething.

So what is going on when your child has a fever? The process of fever begins with stimulation of White Blood Cells (WBCs). These WBCs release a substance called endogenous pyrogen which stimulates the brain’s hypothalamus to raise the body’s thermostat setting. With a new “normal” temperature now set, the body perceives that it is cold and begins to heat up by increasing its metabolic rate, shivering, or seeking warm environments. Blood flow to the skin is constricted to prevent further heat loss and the skin appears pale. Finally, once body temperature rises to the set temperature, the skin flushes and sweats. Other occurrences are a decreased appetite, lethargy, aches, and fatigue.

Fever generates many actions in the body of a child. First is simply the thermal action of raised body temperatures. Elevated body temperatures do not provide a beneficial environment for bacterial growth and survival. A temperature of 103.1° F is bacteriostatic meaning that it prevents bacteria from replicating. When body temperature reaches 104.9° F bacteria are killed (bacteriolysis). Body cells begin to die at 107.6° F.

Other purposes of fever are thyroid stimulation, an increase in blood circulation, an increase in liver activity, and an increase in interferon production. Thyroid stimulation, increased circulation, and enhanced liver activity all promote the metabolism and elimination of toxins produced as the body fights the infection. Increased interferon promotes the anti-viral and anti-bacterial actions of WBCs.
As you can see, the impact of a fever greatly benefits the child by upregulating all healing mechanisms. Failure to mount a fever or blocking a fever prevents beneficial antibiotic effects, prevents toxins from being metabolized efficiently, and decreased the efficacy of WBCs. Obviously a fever that is too high is also harmful, so watch your child carefully and take steps to lower body temperature to a safe level if necessary. In most cases however, fever in a child is a safe bodily function that needs to be watched carefully and supported however possible.

Because fever can be a distressing process to watch a child go through, the following are some ideas to help support the body as it heals.

Body Temperature:

Normal temperature: 98.6°F. This can vary based on many things such as recent exercise, consumption of hot foods, hot weather, overbundling, stage of menstrual cycle, or room temperature. Children tend to run slightly higher than adults.

Fever: 99.5-104.5°F. A fever in this range is a normal bodily response. Watch child carefully, keep well hydrated, and do not give food.

Fever of concern: 104.6°F+. Please call your doctor when body temperature goes this high. Hospitalization may need to be considered.

Support during fever:

Crucial to managing fever in children is proper hydration. Water is preferred, although herbal tea may also be used, especially during chill phase. If vomiting or diarrhea also occurs, hydration with rice water is recommended. Rice water can be made by adding 2 cups of water to ¼ cup of brown rice and cooking until rice is fairly soft. Pour off excess water and drink. This is a great source of electrolytes.

No food should be taken during fever. Typically appetite is very low and this should be respected. The body needs to rest from digestion and dealing with foods.

If your child’s fever rises to a level that you are not comfortable with, a tepid bath can be used to bring it down. A tepid bath is a warm bath, not cold and not hot. A cool cloth can be placed on the forehead as needed.

If fever fails to go down or continues to rise despite measures taken to lower it, or if seizures occur, Call 911 and have your child hospitalized.

There are numerous homeopathic medications that can be very helpful. Please pay attention all symptoms your child experiences as these will be needed to prescribe the best remedy. Examples of common symptoms include dilated eyes, one cheek flushed with one cheek pale, sudden onset, a clingy child, a very irritable child, etc. The more specific and complete the easier a remedy may be found.

Finally, take a deep breath and allow the body to go through its process of healing. A child with a fever, though uncomfortable and distressing, is very common but they will be back to normal before you know it.

Holistic and Natural Treatment for Flu Symptoms

The Influenza virus, or the flu, rears its ugly head each fall and winter causing distress in the form of work loss, missed school days, and many symptoms throughout the whole body. While we are all familiar with the common symptoms of the illness, (fever, extreme fatigue, body aches, headache, cough, etc.), what exactly happens with the flu?

We get sick and exhibit symptoms from viruses like the flu because our immune system is mobilized to destroy the infected cells. Signals from infected cells will trigger our two forms of immune response, the non-specific immune response and the specific immune response. The non-specific immune response increases fever and increases white blood cell growth. It also releases many factors that increase inflammation. This inflammatory response directs the immune system components to the infection site. At the site of infection the white blood cells can mark the infected cells for destruction or can ingest the offending cell. Our specific immune response is mobilized when we have had encounters with an infectious agent sometime before. This response relies upon molecules called antibodies to bind to cells infected with the virus and destroy it. Antibodies are very specific and will recognize only certain viruses. In short, all symptoms we experience from the flu are the body’s immune system responding to the virus.

So what can we do to prevent infection or at least shorten the symptoms from a flu infection? Viruses enter the body typically from oral and nasal secretions. Coughs and sneezes can easily transmit viruses, so taking all the precautions that mom taught you will be helpful. Wash your hands regularly, don’t cough or sneeze on someone, and be aware of those around you who are sick. Since we can’t always follow those guidelines and are not always able to avoid being exposed to viruses, we must have cells that are strong enough to resist infection. The following are 10 ways to prevent viral infections.

A Diet of Quality Food – Food provides our cells with the necessary information to function optimally. Whatever foods you choose to eat try to eat the highest quality food possible. Organic produce, free-range meat, whole grains, and healthy fats all provide the body what it needs to be healthy

Find a Rhythm – This goes hand in hand with stress management. Our body has many natural rhythms that we must honor. These include the sleep cycle, digestion cycle, adrenal gland cycle, and many others. By going to bed and the same time and getting up at the same time, eating at the same times, etc, you will lower stress on your body and it will be stronger.

Stay Hydrated – Our cells are mostly water and need to be hydrated to be healthy and strong. A quality spring water or filtered water is vital, so find a good source and drink to your health.

Avoid Sugar – Processed white sugar and other processed foods containing sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or sugar substitutes like Splenda are all damaging to the immune system. Numerous studies have shown the negative effect of sugar on the white blood cells and other immune cells.

Echinacae angustafolia – this herb really shines when it comes to preventing the flu. It is important to take at the first inkling of flu symptoms. It will reduce the symptoms caused by the immune systems response to the flu virus. A tincture form is very effective and must be taken frequently and in high doses for optimal results. 2 full droppers of tincture every 2 hours should do the trick. It can also be taken when there are no symptoms. Take 5 drops of tincture in 1 liter of water daily.

Vitamin C – Known for many years for its role in enhancing immunity and reducing symptoms of the flu, vitamin C should be taken regularly for health maintenance. 1500 mg per day as a base dose and increasing to bowel tolerance (usually 5,000 – 8,000 mg) when sick. A great source of Vitamin C is the Amalaki fruit, used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine.

Fish Oil – Quality fats are important for cellular health and for helping the body with inflammation. The Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are essential for overall health maintenance.

Probiotics – Intestinal bacteria play a big role in our immune system. In fact it is estimated that 70% of our immune system is located in our gut. Supporting the gut will support the immune system and reduce the symptoms of the flu.

Maintain healthy adrenal glands – Our adrenal glands are in charge of our stress response also known as our fight or flight response. Our hectic lifestyles put a huge burden on them and over time, they often don’t work very well. By supporting them with B vitamins, magnesium, and herbs like Ashwaghanda, Licorice, Holy Basil, and Eleutrococcus, they will assist us in dealing with stress more efficiently.

Now obviously we cannot always prevent the symptoms of viral illnesses like the flu.

Do not suppress a fever. Although it is an uncomfortable symptom of the flu, a fever is the body raising its temperature to heal itself. A fever in the range 99.5-104.5°F is a normal response. Watch the fever carefully, keep well hydrated, and do not give food. A tepid bath or cold washcloth can be used to lower the fever slightly if you are worried.

Homeopathic remedies – the most popular remedy is Occillococcinum. Take 3 pellets at the first hint of flu and 3 pellets every 3 hours after until you feel better. There are many other effective remedies so don’t hesitate to request help finding an effective one.

Chinese medicine – A commonly used Chinese patent formula is Yin Chaio. This one also needs to be taken at the first hint of flu.

Herbal medicine – The following herbs are great for viral infections. It is by no means a complete list. They can be taken together or separately. For best results in reducing the symptoms of the flu take frequently (every 2-3 hours). Echinacae (as mentioned above), Goldenseal, Elderberry, Olive Leaf, Lomatium, and Reishi mushroom.

Properly Detoxifying the Body Facilitates Optimal Health

Restoring health and properly detoxifying the body to achieve optimal physiological function can be likened to painting a room. Treating only symptoms is like painting over unprepared walls.

Fortunately our bodies have amazing systems of detoxification designed to process these toxins and excrete them from the body.

The first step in detoxifying the body is properly processing toxins. This mainly occurs in the liver. Through a series of reactions, called Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification, toxins are modified and prepared for excretion. From the liver they are then sent to the body’s four primary routes of elimination. These routes of elimination are termed emunctories and are vital components in detoxifying the body. An emunctory is any tissue that is capable of allowing excretions to exit the body. The four primary emunctories of the body are the Gastrointestinal system, the Kidneys, the Lungs, and the Skin. Solid wastes are excreted through the GI system as feces, liquid soluble wastes are excreted through the kidneys as urine; the lungs excrete gaseous wastes, and the skin sweats. When these routes are not enough, the body uses its secondary emunctories, the mucus membranes, to excrete wastes and detoxify the body. Excretion through the secondary emunctories takes many forms. Examples include bladder infections, diarrhea, eczema, bronchitis, phlegm, and sinusitis.

Elimination of waste is imperative to proper health. Often, however, our systems of elimination get bogged down and fail to work optimally. As a result waste products are not able to leave the body and they begin to build up. This gives the body no choice but to deal with waste products however it can, storing them in fat cells, in joints, in the blood, or in the cells of organs. By not properly detoxifying the body, we may also develop stones, tumors, skin conditions, ulcers, chronic infections, chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, etc as the body attempts to deal with the accumulated toxins. This is where a cleansing program comes in. By opening the primary emunctories and keeping them open, we allow the body to detoxify, excrete accumulated toxins and improve physiological function.

Detoxifying and cleansing the body are powerful treatments that should not be taken lightly or done on a whim. While the process can be accomplished in many ways, from juice fasts to physician monitored programs, it is imperative that the emunctories are opened and wastes are excreted. A properly done cleansing program will prepare the body for “paint”, allowing symptoms to improve, normal physiological function to be established, and healing to occur. Detoxifying the body is not an easy process and it requires a great deal of work but in the end, the results are beautiful: a “newly painted room” that lasts.
